2025 Brick Plant Tours

This tour offers one hour of professional development (AIA/HSW) and will be applied within two weeks after the tour. Lunch is provided. *** The ttour has been moved to 11:30am - 12:30pm with lunch to follow due to the lunch break of the plant!**

Closed toed shoes are required. PPE is required (hard hat, safety glasses & high vis). Please bring but a limited number will be available to borrow.

Program Description: Participants will learn first-hand through instruction and observation, the comprehensive process of creating fired clay units from raw materials into finished products. Additionally, because of the highly specialized process and equipment used to manufacture, attendees will be guided through the process to learn how clay is mined, shaped, textured, dried, and fired to create a variety of shapes, sizes and colors.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review the performance and physical characteristics of brick.
  • Participants will understand how kiln firing techniques, like flashing and flat setting, can affect the aesthetic appearance of bricks.
  • Analyze the testing and quality control processes essential for brick manufacturing, including water absorption and understand how these tests ensure the structural integrity, weather resistance, aesthetic appeal, and compliance with industry standards
  • Bricks are non-combustible and fire resistance rating of a masonry assembly can be determined according to wall type and participants will understand how the manufacturing process contributes to this.
